The Berlin Academy and the Roman Transition
Berlin, 1802. A child is born into a lineage of sculptors, the nephew of Johann Gottfried Schadow. By 1815, the halls of the Prussian Academy of Arts become his training ground. He moves through the studio of his uncle as a pupil and assistant, absorbing the technical rigors of the craft between 1817 and 1822. The trajectory shifts with a scholarship to Rome.
Rome becomes the permanent stage for his career. Under the guidance of Bertel Thorwaldsen, the sculptor refines a style rooted in the classical tradition. He does not merely inhabit the city; he integrates into its artistic infrastructure, eventually taking over the studio of his deceased cousin, Ridolfo Schadow. His hands work Carrara marble, shaping figures that breathe with mythological life.
Classical Forms and Royal Commissions
The studio in Rome functions as a meeting point for the Grand Tour elite. Aristocrats from England and Russia pass through, seeking the permanence of stone. The Prussian court becomes a primary patron. In 1854, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV acquires Najade for Sanssouci, a work that would later face removal due to erosion before its eventual replacement by a replica.
His repertoire spans various subjects, often leaning into the allegorical:
- Achille che si arma (1832)
- Hebe and Ganymede (1834)
- Diana after the Hunt (1838)
- Prometheus (1844)
- Judith (1868)
Beyond the heavy marble, he works in oil paints. His versatility allows him to capture the likenesses of the era's most powerful figures, including busts of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria.
Leadership and Legacy in Rome
The year 1871 marks a peak in his professional standing. He is appointed President of the Accademia di San Luca, a position held until his death. It is a rare distinction; no foreigner or Protestant had held this honorary post since Thorvaldsen. His influence extends to the restoration of antiquities, utilizing his connections with archaeologists to facilitate purchases for the Prussian royal collections.
He dies in Rome on 29 September 1879. He leaves behind a body of work distributed across major institutions, from the State Hermitage Museum to the Musée d'arts de Nantes, marking a life defined by the tension between his German origins and his Roman reality.
