Early Life, Family and Training
Eduardo Balaca was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1840. His early years were shaped by the movements of his family, specifically his father, José Balaca, a painter of portraits and miniatures. Because of political exile, the family spent a significant portion of Eduardo's childhood in Lisbon. This period of living abroad preceded their return to Madrid around 1852.
The boy's first encounters with the tools of the trade happened at home. His father provided his initial art lessons, introducing him to the technicalities of the brush and pigment. This early instruction laid the groundwork for his later work as a portrait painter, decorative artist, and art teacher. He eventually moved into formal study, attending the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
Exhibitions and Notable Commissions
His presence in the Madrid art scene was marked by frequent exhibitions. In 1864, he received an honorable mention at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He returned to the same exhibition three years later, earning another honorable mention in 1867. These recognitions followed a steady period of showing his work to the public.
His commissions often moved beyond the canvas and into the public and religious spaces of the city. He produced an Allegory of Philosophy for the Ateneo de Madrid. This work placed his hand within the intellectual circles of the time. He also collaborated with his brother, Ricardo, on religious figures. Together, they created the figures of Saints Mark and Matthew for the Iglesia del Buen Suceso.
