His formative years were marked by travel to Italy and India, followed by service as a soldier during the First World War, where he was stationed on the Eastern Front, in Greece, Turkey, and Serbia. Following the death of his wife, Andrée Berolzheimer, in 1944, he experienced a period of deep depression. He remained active in the artistic community, serving as president of the Société des peintres-graveurs français and eventually becoming a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
