A Life Defined by Resilience
Evern "Earl" Bailly arrived in the world in 1903 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The son of a blacksmith and a schoolteacher, his early years were marked by a profound physical shift when he contracted polio at the age of two or three. This illness left him a quadriplegic, stripping him of the use of his arms and legs. Yet, where physical movement ceased, a different kind of expression took root. Under the guidance of his mother, he learned to hold a pen and brush in his mouth. It was a difficult, singular way to navigate the world, but it allowed him to translate the landscapes of his home into visual form.
His childhood was not one of quiet withdrawal. Despite the limitations imposed by his condition, his family adapted his surroundings to support his growing talent. His brother Donald often assisted with the practicalities of his craft, such as squeezing paint from tubes or adapting tools for linoleum block prints. This shared effort turned a solitary struggle into a familial endeavor.
The Maritime Canvas
Bailly’s work was deeply rooted in the salt and stone of the Atlantic coast. He possessed an eye for the rugged textures of Nova Scotia, focusing his attention on harbors, fishing scenes, and the rocky shores of places like Peggys Cove and Blue Rocks. His technique often utilized impasto strokes, creating a physical depth that mirrored the choppy waters he depicted. Whether working in watercolours or oils, his compositions captured the strength of the maritime environment.
His artistic development took him beyond the borders of Nova Scotia. He studied under George Pearse Ennis in Maine and pursued further training in New York. These travels expanded his perspective, yet his heart remained tied to the Atlantic. In 1933, he traveled to the Chicago World's Fair aboard the schooner Bluenose, a voyage that connected his local subject matter to a much larger stage.
Recognition and Presence
The reach of Bailly’s work extended far beyond the small fishing communities of his youth. His paintings found their way into the collections of significant figures, including Canadian prime ministers William Lyon Mackenzie King and John Diefenbaker, as well as Elizabeth II and Franklin D. Roosevelt. These encounters brought a level of international visibility to a man whose daily life was centered in a small studio in Lunenburg.
His legacy is physically anchored in the place where he lived and worked. The Bailly House in Lunenburg is recognized as a historic site, marking the location where his studio once stood. Today, much of his output is preserved within the Lunenburg Art Gallery Society, ensuring that his specific vision of the Canadian coast remains accessible to those who study the history of Atlantic art.
