A Life in Brussels
Born in Mons, Charles Wautier was a Flemish Baroque painter who became an active figure in Brussels during the second half of the 17th century. He was the brother of the painter Michaelina Wautier, and the two may have collaborated on their works. After moving to Brussels in 1633, he eventually joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1652, a necessary step to practice professionally, sign his paintings, and take on apprentices. Throughout his career, he was known as "Monsieur" Wautier, and his name was sometimes recorded as Wauthiers or Woutiers.
Wautier's professional life included training seven pupils between 1653 and 1686. He was a prolific portraitist who gained fame among the elite, securing commissions from various noble families, including the Ligne and Croÿ families, the counts of Merode, and the lords of Grimbergen. His notable patrons included Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria and James, the Duke of York.
Artistic Focus and Legacy
The oeuvre of Charles Wautier was primarily dedicated to religious works and portraits of the nobility, particularly officers serving in the Habsburg army and navy. He did not produce still lives, genre scenes, or landscapes. His portraiture included subjects such as:
- Leopold-Wilhelm von Habsburg
- James, Duke of York
- Count Ferdinand Gaston Lamoral de Croÿ
- Jacques Neutre, abbé of the Abbey of Val des Écoliers
His religious output included works such as The Presentation in the Temple and Saint Peter Receiving the Keys from Christ. In his later years, after his sister's death, Wautier focused on his financial affairs and real estate in Brussels, where he died at the age of 94.
