The Light of Kortenhoef
Amsterdam, 30 January 1875. Bernardus Antonie van Beek enters the world, beginning a life that would eventually find its rhythm in the water-rich landscapes of northern Holland. He does not follow the path of the academy. Instead, his hands first learn the trade of a decorative painter alongside his father. This early immersion in texture and surface sets the stage for a career defined by the physical properties of paint.
The transition from decorative work to fine art takes shape through the School of Arts and Crafts. He moves through Katwijk aan Zee until 1907, then settles into a studio in Amsterdam. By 1911, the focus shifts permanently toward Kortenhoef. Here, the landscape becomes more than a subject; it becomes a teacher. In these wetlands, he encounters Paul Gabriël. This meeting alters his trajectory, introducing him to the specific nuances of water lily landscapes and the heavy, earthy reality of peat.
Technique and Tonality
The brushwork is loose, fluid, and unapologetic. Van Beek employs a wet-into-wet technique on panel, a method that allows for a specific kind of luminosity. He does not seek the darkness often associated with winter scenes. Instead, he selects pigments and binders that produce a strong surface light, following the traditions of the second generation of the Hague School. His palette is a careful modification of this tradition, utilizing graded shades of blue to capture a trapped, heavy atmosphere.
His compositions follow an old Dutch logic. The eye moves from the bottom left toward the top right, with horizons shifting between the lower and upper thirds of the frame. This structural discipline supports his varied subject matter:
- Summer landscapes and polders
- Aquatic scenes featuring water lilies and ditches
- Village faces and old city quarters
- Still lifes focused on floral subjects
- Inland fishing themes
A Legacy in the Polder
The 1920s bring a shift toward brightness. The heavy, atmospheric moods of his earlier years give way to light-filled village scenes. Even as he explores these brighter tones, the influence of masters like Jan Vermeer and Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde remains visible in his depictions of city faces, such as his views of Delft and Haarlem. He remains a key figure of the Kortenhoef School, a sub-movement of the Hague School that carries the weight of the Barbizon tradition.
His reach extends beyond the canvas to the lens, as he also practices amateur photography. In 1928, his work reaches a global stage when it is included in the painting event of the Summer Olympics art competition. His life concludes in Kortenhoef in 1941. He leaves behind a body of work held in collections such as the Goois Museum, capturing the quiet, atmospheric reality of the Dutch landscape before the mid-century shifts.
