The Baghdad Foundations

Baghdad, 1963. The early years of Ali Jabbar are rooted in the classrooms of Iraq, moving through elementary and middle school studies before entering the formal rigors of the Institute of Fine Arts. By 1987, he holds a Diploma in Painting, followed closely by a BA from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad in 1990. The air of the Iraqi art scene is thick with competition; in 1985, he secures first prize at the Iraqi Modern Arts Festival, and again in 1987 at the Alwasty Festival. These early victories establish a technical foundation that remains even as his geography shifts.

The trajectory changes in 1992. He leaves Iraq for Denmark, a move that introduces a new layer of design-oriented thinking to his practice. In Copenhagen, he studies at the KKA School of Design, earning a diploma in graphic design in 2002. This period marks the expansion of his toolkit from the brush and chisel to the precision of the designer.

A Multi-Disciplinary Expansion

The artist does not settle into a single medium. His practice becomes a collision of painting, sculpture, and design. In the realm of sculpture, he works with bronze, steel, stone, marble, iron, and stainless steel. Large-scale public monuments appear in cities like Istanbul, Tehran, Ankara, Mersin, Mashhad, Edirne, Manama, Muscat, Beirut, Ahwaz, Hurghada, Guangzhou, Ploiesti, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai, Romania, and Taiwan. These heavy, physical forms exist in stark contrast to the delicate, often surrealist nature of his canvases.

His paintings operate through an abstract-cubist fusion, moving between expressionism, realism, and minimalist illustrations. He utilizes a specific tension: the contrast of colors and tones, the interplay of light and shadow, and the friction between what is covered and what is naked. His figures often inhabit a space where fiction meets fact, featuring characters that hide behind masks or are rendered through bold, intertwined shapes and decorative patterns. In some works, he reduces celebrities and politicians to recognizable but stripped-down geometric forms.

Global Presence and Recognition

The movement of his life—from Baghdad to Copenhagen and finally to London—is mirrored in the movement of his exhibitions. His solo shows span a wide map: Hamburg, Salou, Herning, London, Amman, and Copenhagen. He has participated in major international gatherings including the Baghdad International Biennial, the Cairo Painting Biennial, the Tehran Painting Biennial, the Grand Palais Biennial in Paris, and the Sharjah International Biennial.

Recognition comes through both awards and curation. His sculptural work has earned first prizes at the Dubai International Sculpture Symposium in 2005, the Tehran International Sculpture Symposium in 2007, and the Ahwaz International Sculpture Symposium in 2018. Beyond creating, he takes on the role of curator for the Tuwaiq International Sculpture Symposium and the Jeddah International Sculpture Symposium. His works are held in permanent collections such as the Ramzi and Saeda Dalloul Art Foundation in Beirut and the Ibrahimi Collection of Iraqi Fine Art in Amman.
