Early Life, Family and Artistic Training

Alfred Roloff entered the world on 19 March 1879 in Lassan, Germany. He was born into a family where creativity and service were present; his father, Wilhelm Roloff, served as a naval officer, while his mother was Caroline née Sadewasser. Artistry seemed to run through the family blood, as his younger brother, Otto, would eventually follow a similar path to become a painter and art professor.

From a young age, Alfred Roloff showed a natural talent for drawing. This ability was particularly notable because he lived with a congenital syndactyly, which meant his right ring and middle fingers were joined together. Despite this physical difference, his hand found its way to paper with ease, revealing a skill that would define his life's work.

His formal education began in earnest when he moved to Berlin. From 1896 to 1901, he studied at the Academy of Arts, honing the technical skills required for both illustration and painting. This period of training provided the foundation for the many years he would spend capturing movement and life on canvas.

Illustrator and Commercial Success in Berlin

After completing his studies, Alfred Roloff moved into the busy commercial world of Berlin. He found work as an illustrator for the Verlagshaus für Volksliteratur und Kunst, a prolific publisher that supplied the European market with popular fiction. His talent for creating striking imagery made him a valuable asset to the firm. He produced book covers that were reproduced by millions, bringing his visual style into the homes of a vast audience through the medium of dime novels.

His ability to capture attention through design led to significant professional opportunities. In 1905, he participated in a competition for advertising designs sponsored by Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei and Stollwerck. His work was so well received that the judges recommended his design for purchase. This success helped establish his reputation, leading to further employment designing covers that became a common sight in the hands of readers across the region.

During the years between 1907 and 1911, he contributed to the visual identity of the Aus den Geheimakten des Welt-Detektivs series. These illustrations required a sense of movement and narrative tension to suit the sensational themes of the detective stories. His work during this period helped define the look of mass-market entertainment in the early twentieth century.

Style and Subject Matter of His Paintings

While his early career was defined by the fast-paced world of commercial illustration, Alfred Roloff found his true calling in the study of animals. He became an animal painter, focusing his attention almost exclusively on horses. This devotion was so central to his identity that he earned the nickname "Pferde-Roloff" among those who followed his work. In his paintings, horses are rarely still; they are captured in moments of intense, physical exertion. He had a particular talent for depicting them in motion, often portraying herds caught in the middle of a frantic flight or navigating through the heavy atmosphere of a thunderstorm.

His compositions frequently placed these animals in high-stakes environments. He often painted horses running from perceived danger, using the energy of the animals to drive the narrative of the piece. This sense of movement was often paired with dramatic natural settings, such as stormy skies or wide, open landscapes. Whether he was working with oil on cardboard or larger canvases, the focus remained on the raw, kinetic power of the equine form as it reacted to the elements or the threat of pursuit.

Exhibitions and Notable Works

Roloff’s reputation grew through his ability to capture the raw energy of animals in motion. His paintings often focused on the tension of horses in natural settings, such as in Horses in Thunderstorm. He had a particular talent for depicting the spirit of young animals, a quality seen in his work Fohlenzwillinge (Foal Twins). Other pieces, like Rasende Pferde, reflected his interest in the power and speed of his subjects.

His presence in the official art circles of the time was significant. Between 1940 and 1944, his work was included in the Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung held at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. This period saw his paintings move from private collections into the most prominent public spaces. One of his most famous paintings, Flüchtende Pferde (Fleeing Horses), was even displayed in the Neue Reichskanzlei.

Later Years and Death

The later years of Alfred Roloff's life were marked by the shifting political landscape of Germany. During the Nazi dictatorship, he was a member of the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste. His personal life also saw significant change during this period. He had an affair with Elisabeth von Trotta, a union that resulted in a daughter, Margarethe von Trotta.

As the Second World War approached, the stability of his life in Berlin began to fade. He moved to Warthegau as the conflict intensified. Eventually, he found a place to settle in Rade bei Rendsburg. He remained there until his death on 7 December 1951.
