Early Life, Family and Training
Albert Sébille entered the world on July 26, 1874, in the port city of Marseille, France. He grew up in a household shaped by structure and design, born to Ernest Léopold Sébille, an architect, and Eugénie Marie Richard. This familial connection to the built environment likely provided a steady foundation for his own developing eye for form and perspective.
His path as a creator led him from the south of France to the heart of the capital. At the École des beaux-arts de Paris, Albert Sébille studied under Jean Léon Gérôme, a period that helped refine his technical abilities. It was during these formative years that he began to develop the skills that would define his career as a painter, watercolorist, and poster artist.
Professional Career and Honors
Sébille’s professional life was deeply intertwined with the maritime identity of France. In 1906, he reached a significant milestone when he was named a painter official of the Marine. This role allowed him to focus his talents on the sea and the vessels that defined an era of travel. His dedication to his craft and his country was recognized through several prestigious distinctions over the decades. He was awarded the Croix de guerre 1914-1918, a recognition of service during a period of immense national struggle.
As his reputation grew, so did the honors bestowed upon him by the state. In 1926, he was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. This was not his final recognition from this order; by 1950, he had reached the rank of Officier de la Légion d'honneur. Beyond these military and state honors, he was also recognized as an Officier d'académie, reflecting a life spent contributing to the cultural and institutional fabric of France.
Notable Maritime Works
Sébille’s career was deeply tied to the great ocean liners of his era. His brush often captured the massive scale of these vessels, such as his depiction of the Battleship Edgar Quinet being completed at Brest. He had a particular affinity for the French Line, documenting the routes and the ships that defined transatlantic travel. In 1922, he produced a work titled French Line / Havre, Plymouth, New York, and later returned to the subject of the Paquebot "Paris" / Cie Gle Transatlantique around 1925. His interest in these ships continued as he painted the Paquebot "Paris" Havre - New York French Line - Cie. Gle. Transatlantique about 1930.
The artist also worked with different mediums to capture the spirit of maritime travel. He created a gouache maquette titled Minuit sur l'Atlantique / Normandie circa 1937, a piece that focused on the legendary SS Normandie. His ability to translate the movement and presence of these ships onto canvas or paper allowed him to document a specific age of steam and steel. Through these works, he recorded the physical reality of the liners that crossed the Atlantic, from their construction to their service on the high seas.
