Born in the vibrant, culturally layered landscape of Istanbul in 1946, Tülin Önat has emerged as a profound voice within contemporary Turkish art. Her artistic odyssey is not merely a chronicle of changing styles, but a deep, philosophical exploration of the concept of infinity. To encounter an Önat canvas is to step away from the literal world and enter a realm where visual perception transcends reality. Her work does not seek to mirror the physical world; instead, it invites the viewer into a meditative state, offering an experience that exists beyond the boundaries of mere sight.
The foundations of her practice were laid at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul, from which she graduated in 1971. A pivotal moment in her development occurred in 1973, when an Austrian government scholarship allowed her to attend the Salzburg Summer Academy. This mastery of texture—often achieved by layering acrylic paints upon substrates like burlap or heavily textured canvas—creates surfaces that ripple with subtle variations in light and sheen.
