Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1967, Silvina Sicoli’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in the vibrant cultural landscape of her homeland and shaped by a confluence of influences – from fashion design to textile traditions, and a profound engagement with the natural world. Her formative years were spent studying at the Faculty of Design and Applied Arts (FADU/UBA), where she honed her skills as a designer, later transitioning into teaching roles within the design and expressive media departments. This early exposure to both creation and instruction proved invaluable, laying the groundwork for her distinctive approach to art.
Sicoli’s artistic development took an international turn with studies at the Iowa School of Art in the United States and the HBK Braunschweig Master of Arts in Germany. These experiences broadened her perspective, introducing her to diverse artistic methodologies and fostering a deeper understanding of contemporary art practices. Crucially, she also benefited from mentorships with established Argentine artists like Rosines Monner Sans and Tulio de Sagastizabal, absorbing their techniques and philosophies.
A pivotal moment in Sicoli’s career arrived in 2017 when she co-founded the Selvanegra Gallery with her sister, Josefina Sícoli. Located in the heart of Buenos Aires' microcenter, Selvanegra quickly established itself as a vital platform for showcasing emerging and mid-career Argentine artists. The gallery’s mission is clear: to promote contemporary art within Argentina, providing crucial visibility to often overlooked talents. Its annual five exhibitions and summer residency program represent a significant contribution to the local art scene.
Sicoli's involvement with Selvanegra isn’t merely a professional endeavor; it reflects her deep commitment to fostering artistic community and supporting the next generation of Argentine creatives. The gallery serves as a testament to her belief in the power of art to connect, inspire, and challenge perspectives.
Sicoli’s artistic style is immediately recognizable for its evocative blend of painting and textile techniques. Her works frequently explore themes of nature, emotion, and perception—subjects that resonate deeply with the Argentine landscape and cultural heritage. She masterfully combines acrylics, gouache, and clay on canvas, layering textures and creating a tactile quality that invites viewers to engage with her pieces on multiple levels.
Her process often involves incorporating textile elements, adding another layer of complexity and visual richness to her paintings. This deliberate fusion reflects a desire to move beyond traditional boundaries, suggesting a dialogue between the ephemeral nature of paint and the enduring qualities of fabric—materials deeply intertwined with Argentine history and craft traditions. The title "Drama de Rombos" (Drama of Rhombi) exemplifies this approach, utilizing geometric forms within a richly textured composition.
Silvina Sicoli’s work has garnered significant recognition throughout her career. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Argentina and internationally, including shows at institutions like Belleza y Felicidad, Casa 13, B y F Fiorito, Fundación Proa, Agatha Costure, Kentler Gallery, and the Museo Marítimo de Ushuaia. Her pieces have been selected for prestigious awards such as the Itaú Prize (2022) and the SNAV Award (2023), solidifying her position as a leading contemporary Argentine artist.
Her ongoing work in her Buenos Aires studio, coupled with her role as gallery director, demonstrates a sustained dedication to both artistic creation and nurturing the broader art community. Silvina Sicoli’s legacy is one of innovation, passion, and unwavering support for the vibrant artistic spirit of Argentina.
