Joseph Alexander Ames: A Life in Portraiture

Joseph Alexander Ames (1816–1872) was an American artist primarily celebrated for his skill in portrait and genre painting. Born originally as Joseph Emes, he left a lasting mark on the 19th-century American art scene.

Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Ames was born in Roxbury, New Hampshire, and demonstrated artistic talent from a very young age. His abilities were recognized early; at just twelve years old, Henry Theodore Tuckerman wrote about one of his paintings, signaling the promise of a burgeoning career. After achieving moderate success locally in Saugus, Massachusetts, Ames moved to Boston in 1841 to further develop his artistic skills.

Artistic Development and Influences

During his time in Boston, Ames actively sought to refine his style, initially drawing inspiration from the work of Washington Allston. He aimed to replicate Allston’s romantic and dramatic approach to painting. This period was crucial in shaping his artistic foundation. In 1848, Ames embarked on a transformative journey to Rome, where he painted a portrait of Pope Pius IX. This work gained significant recognition when it was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1850.

Career and Commissions

Upon his return from Italy, Ames’s reputation grew rapidly, leading to prestigious commissions from prominent figures such as Rufus Choate, Daniel Webster, and Abraham Lincoln. He established studios in Boston, first in Amory Hall (circa 1849), then on Tremont Street (circa 1856), and later on Summer Street. Ames actively exhibited his work at esteemed institutions including the Boston Athenæum, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy.

Later Life and Legacy

Eventually, Ames relocated to Baltimore and then New York City, where he tragically died of a “brain fever” on October 30, 1872. His contributions to American art were recognized during his lifetime through his membership in key artistic organizations.

Major Achievements and Historical Significance

  • Founding Member: Ames was one of the founding members of the Boston Art Club, a significant institution for fostering artistic community and exhibition opportunities.
  • National Academy Recognition: He was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in 1870, solidifying his standing within the American art establishment.
  • Portraiture Legacy: Ames’s portraits offer valuable insights into the appearance and personalities of influential figures from the mid-19th century.

Family Connections

Ames came from a family with diverse talents. His brother, Nathan Ames, was a poet and patent solicitor who invented numerous machines, including the escalator. His wife, Sarah Fisher Ames, was also an accomplished artist – a sculptor.
