A muscular, dark-toned figure dominates this circular composition, seated amidst swirling, voluminous clouds. This is Pluto, the Roman deity of the underworld, rendered with a heavy, physical presence. His gaze is directed downward in a pensive attitude, one hand running through a thick black beard while the other holds a key—the traditional attribute signifying his dominion over the realm of the dead. The atmosphere is somber, defined by a palette of earthy browns, grays, and blacks that emphasize the gloom of his domain.
The tension of the scene is heightened by the presence of Cerberus, the three-headed guardian dog. The beast is depicted with large, open jaws, poised for action at the god's side. The interplay of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, illuminates the musculature of Pluto's torso and his weathered skin, leaving much of the surrounding void in deep shadow.
