Origins and History of the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum occupies a central position in Moscow, situated between Red Square and Manege Square. Founded in 1872 by Ivan Zabelin, Aleksey Uvarov, and several other Slavophiles, the institution was established to preserve the narrative of Russian history. The site itself holds layers of significance, having formerly been the location of the Principal Medicine Store built by order of Peter the Great in the Moscow Baroque style.

The collection spans a vast chronology, covering the period from ancient times to the early 20th century. Within its walls, the presence of prehistoric relics exists alongside artworks acquired by the Romanov dynasty. These objects, numbering in the millions, offer a physical connection to the past. The museum's scope remains broad, encompassing the evolution of the region from its earliest tribal inhabitants through the complexities of the modern era.

The Building and Its Architecture

The site currently occupied by the museum was once the location of the Principal Medicine Store, a structure commissioned by Peter the Great in the Moscow Baroque style. The present edifice, however, emerged from a different architectural vision. Built between 1875 and 1881, the structure follows a neo-Russian design. The project was entrusted to Vladimir Osipovich Shervud, whose work defines the physical presence of the institution. The first eleven exhibit halls officially opened to the public in 1883.

Inside, the atmosphere is shaped by the Russian Revival style. The interiors feature decorations by Viktor Vasnetsov, Henryk Siemiradzki, and Ivan Aivazovsky. These artistic contributions lend a specific character to the halls, where the weight of the architecture meets the detail of the ornamentation. The red-brick exterior and the specific geometry of the design create a sense of permanence within the urban landscape of Moscow.

Exhibitions and Research

The museum functions as a significant center for research, science, and education. Its departments facilitate academic growth through the hosting of lectures and seminars, as well as internships. These activities extend to specialized awards dedicated to research and restoration practices. Such scholarly rigor ensures that the vast collection remains a subject of continuous study.

The exhibition program is active and varied, with approximately 30 to 40 projects held annually. These exhibitions draw from the museum's extensive collection and originate from various locations throughout Russia. This constant rotation of displays allows for a shifting perspective on the historical objects held within the walls. Since the end of 2016, a virtual tour has also been available on the official website, providing a digital way to encounter the collections.
