Early Life, Family and Training
Joža Uprka arrives into the world on 26 October 1861 in Kněždub. He is born into a peasant family, a setting defined by the rhythms of rural labor . His father, an amateur painter, provides the first spark of artistic inclination. This influence extends to the family unit, as Joža and his brother, František, both find themselves drawn toward the pursuit of art.
The path leads from the countryside to the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Here, Joža Uprka enters the studio of František Čermák to begin his formal training. The instruction is rigorous, shaping the young artist's technical foundation. However, the mentorship ends abruptly with the death of Čermák. This loss forces a shift in direction. Uprka transfers to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, moving further into the academic centers of Europe to refine his craft.
Artistic Career and Travels
The academic path leads from Prague to Munich, where Uprka enters the orbit of a burgeoning Czech artistic community. He becomes a co-founder of the "Škréta" student organization, a group that includes figures like Alfons Mucha and Antonín Slavíček . This period of formation shifts toward the international stage when a scholarship facilitates a stay in Paris from 1892 to 1893. By 1894, with the assistance of Mucha, his work reaches the Salon.
The focus turns inward toward the landscapes and people of his homeland. In 1897, he holds his first major exhibition in Prague, marking a significant moment in his professional recognition. His brushwork begins to settle into a specific rhythm, blending elements of Impressionism and Art Nouveau to document the folklife of Southern Moravia. He seeks out the essence of the people, aiming to capture the life of his tribe as a conscious observer.
Later travels expand his visual vocabulary beyond the Moravian borders. In 1928, he visits Dubrovnik, observing the local customs and traditions of the region. This habit of observation remains a constant, even as his medium shifts from painting to etchings in his later years.
Life in Hroznová Lhota and Ilava
Marriage in 1899 brings Uprka to a small house in Hroznová Lhota. He establishes a studio within its walls, anchoring his practice to the local landscape. By 1904, the residence undergoes a transformation. Under the design of Dušan Jurkovič, the house becomes a two-story villa inspired by folk architecture. This space evolves into a central meeting point for many notable Czech artists, writers, and composers. However, the domestic stability shifts when his wife's mental health declines, leading to her placement in a mental hospital at Kroměříž, where she remains until her death in 1959.
The focus of his work shifts. Between 1922 and 1937, Uprka resides in a castle in Ilava. He does not remain stationary; he maintains a studio in the Slovakian countryside to seek fresh inspiration. This period marks a departure from his earlier painting toward the practice of etchings.
Later Years and Death
The final chapter of Uprka's career finds a significant moment in 1937. His folk paintings receive a major showing in Uherské Hradiště at the "Výstava Slovácka 1937". This exhibition marks a late-stage recognition of his lifelong dedication to documenting the customs and life of the region.
Health begins to fail. He dies of kidney failure on 12 January 1940. His passing occurs in Hroznová Lhota. Following his death, he is returned to his place of birth for burial.
