The Formative Years and Bauhaus Education
Born in Münster, Germany, Wilhelm Imkamp was the youngest of four children. His early artistic development began at the age of fourteen when he attended the Gipsklasse at the Münster Art School, practicing drawing from plaster models, followed by the Aktklasse at age sixteen. To support his family, he undertook small portrait commissions from a young age. In 1926, he enrolled at the Staatliche Bauhaus Dessau, where he participated in the workshops for wall painting and the Bauhaus printing shop. During his studies, he took color and form lessons from Wassily Kandinsky and studied in the free painting classes of both Paul Klee and Kandinsky. His time at the Bauhaus also included studying under Lyonel Feininger.
Artistic Evolution and Abstract Mastery
After a period of study in Paris, Imkamp became a freelance artist in Essen. During the National Socialist era, he worked as a portrait painter to maintain his livelihood and avoid a potential ban on his abstract works, which he continued to create in private. Following the war, he dedicated himself exclusively to abstraction. His work is characterized by a process of creating compositions through the interaction of color and form without the use of preliminary sketches or studies. His later years were marked by a move toward more luminous, cheerful colors and, in his final decade, a shift toward humorous, graphic small-format works featuring fantasy creatures.
