The Life and Art of Tiberio Tinelli
Tiberio Tinelli was an Italian painter of the early-Baroque period, primarily active in his native city of Venice. He gained recognition as one of the most important Italian portrait painters of the first quarter of the 17th century and was highly admired by the critics of his time. His artistic development was shaped by his training under Giovanni Contarini, a pupil of the late Titian, as well as Leandro Bassano. His work evolved from the influences of these late Mannerist painters toward a freer and more introspective portrait style. Tinelli was particularly well known for his portraits of intellectuals, merchants, and the aristocracy in Venice, frequently depicting his subjects in historical dress.
Beyond his portraiture, Tinelli produced numerous religious and secular works, as well as small pictures featuring mythological and historical subjects. Some of his paintings were included in the collection of Louis XIII, king of France, who knighted him with the Order of Saint Michael. His life ended in despondency due to domestic afflictions, leading him to commit suicide.
