Life and Career of Stephan Kessler
Born in Donauwörth, Germany, Stephan Kessler was a significant Baroque painter of Tyrol. He established a successful painting workshop in Brixen, which he managed with great entrepreneurial skill. His reputation extended beyond South Tyrol, attracting clients in cities such as Graz and Vienna. His workshop was later joined by his sons, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Throughout his life, Kessler was married three times; his first wife, Margretha, had seven children with him, and she passed away in 1692.

Kessler's oeuvre includes a variety of sacred and profane subjects. His sacred works consist of altar retables, scenes from the life of Christ, and biblical history, including depictions of saints. Notable examples include a large-scale painting of the feast in the house of Simon and various depictions of the life of Mary. His profane commissions often came from castle owners and included historical scenes, portraits, festivities, and the seasons.
