A Life in Color and Observation
Born in Watertown, United States, Robert Guinan began his artistic journey fueled by a childhood fascination with the illustrations of Herbert Morton Stoops. His early talent was recognized at the age of fifteen during an exhibition at the Watertown library, where critics noted his ability to capture tense moments and expressive facial features. After attending night classes with Mary Morley, Guinan’s path took him through the Air Force, where he served as a radio operator in North Africa and Turkey. It was during this period of service that he began to focus on portraying the disenfranchised, drawing inspiration from the peasant life and environments he encountered.
In 1959, Guinan moved to Chicago, Illinois, to enroll in the School of the Art Institute. He became deeply immersed in the city's nightclub culture and the vibrant atmosphere of Maxwell Street, an open-air market. His work often explored themes involving street performers, musicians, barflies, and historical scenes, as well as landscapes and building structures. In 1972, he was introduced to Parisian art dealer Albert Loeb, beginning a long-standing professional relationship with the Albert Loeb Gallery.
