A Life in Lines and Illustration

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Ofélia Marques was a modernist painter, caricaturist, and illustrator. After enrolling at the Lyceum Maria Pia and later studying Romance languages philology at the University of Lisbon, she abandoned her degree to pursue an artistic career. Her first exhibition took place in 1926 at the 2nd Salão de Outono of the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in Lisbon.

She became widely recognized for her illustrations of children's books and short stories, collaborating with notable authors such as José Gomes Ferreira, Fernanda de Castro, and Natércia Freire. Her illustrative work appeared in various magazines, including Atlântico, Panorama, Revista de Portugal, and Informação. In the 1930s, she developed a series of scathing caricatures that depicted her friends as children.

Artistic Expression and Legacy

Beyond her public illustrations, Marques engaged in private artistic pursuits, including self-portraits and erotic drawings. These works often featured lesbian scenes that challenged the puritanical morality of the Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal. In 1940, she received the Souza-Cardosa prize for her portrait of the poet Luísa d'Eça Leal.

Her artistic legacy has been honored through various posthumous exhibitions, including a retrospective in Almada in 2002. Her work has been featured in significant displays, such as the 2021 exhibition Tudo O Que Eu Quero at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon.
