Early Life, Family and Training

Leopold Rothaug was born on 27 October 1868 in Vienna. He grew up in a household where the act of making was a shared language. His father, Theodor Rothaug, provided his first lessons in art, guiding his hands through the early stages of learning. This lineage of craft ran deep through his family; his mother, Karoline Rothaug, came from a line of painters and sculptors, ensuring that the sight of pigment and stone was a constant presence in his upbringing.

The influence of his family extended to his brother, Alexander Rothaug, who was born two years after Leopold. Together, they moved through an environment shaped by the traditions of their ancestors. After these early lessons at home, Leopold Rothaug went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, refining the technical skills that had begun in his father's studio.

Professional Career and Theater Work

Rothaug’s professional life was shaped by the busy, shared spaces of the Viennese art scene. He spent much of his working years as a theater painter, a role that required a steady hand and an understanding of how light and color behave on a stage. This practical work was rooted in the studios of established painters, where the daily rhythm was dictated by the needs of the theater and the demands of large-scale scenery.

He spent time in the studio of Carlo Brioschi, a space where many different hands contributed to the same vision. His work there placed him alongside other artists like Hermann Burghart and Johann Kautsky. In these environments, the boundaries between individual styles often blurred as painters worked together on complex sets. He shared these workspaces with Konrad Petrides, Georg Janny, Ferdinand Brunner, and Alfons Mucha, all contributing to the visual atmosphere of the productions they supported.

Exhibitions and Notable Works

Rothaug’s presence in Munich’s exhibition halls was a recurring part of his professional life. In 1899, he brought Schloß am Meer and Deutscher Urwald to the Royal Glass Palace. The following year, he returned to the same venue to show Musenhain and Gebirgsee. These early appearances established his focus on the natural world and its quiet, specific details.

Later years saw his work appearing in the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich. In 1938, he exhibited Ziehender Eichhirsch and Kirschlein im Walde. He continued this pattern in 1939 with Quelle im deutschen Wald. By the early 1940s, his contributions to the exhibition included Das Hausgärtchen and Das Gewitter in 1942, followed by Waldschlucht in 1943. His paintings often captured the stillness of a forest or the weight of a storm, focusing on the textures of the landscape.

His canvases remain in various collections, including the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich. Other works from his period include Beech Tree in the Sparbacher Tiergarten, dated about 1926, and Classical Landscape from 1939. He also produced Distant Horizon around 1945. These pieces, along with undated works like At Cobenzl, Forest Landscape, and Buchenwald, reflect a career spent observing the subtle shifts in light and terrain.
