The Sketch of a Scottish Life

Born in Skirling, Peeblesshire, on August 30, 1780, James Howe was the son of a minister, William Howe. His early years were shaped by the quietude of the Scottish countryside, though his path moved quickly from the parish school toward the practicalities of the Edinburgh art scene. He began his career as an apprentice to a housepainter, a humble beginning that likely grounded his understanding of color and surface. He spent much of his youth painting panoramic exhibitions, a pursuit that allowed him to focus his developing eye on the anatomy and character of animals.

His reputation grew through a meticulous devotion to the likeness of livestock. He was not merely a painter of animals, but a chronicler of breeds, commissioned by the Highland Society of Scotland to illustrate domestic animals to encourage better breeding. His hand was sought after by Sir John Sinclair to document various cattle, and his drawings eventually found their way into print through engravings of horses and cattle published in 1824 and 1832.

A Life in Ink and Oil

Howe’s career was defined by a steady presence in the Scottish art establishment. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Edinburgh exhibitions, the Royal Institution, and the Royal Scottish Academy from 1808 until his death. His work moved between the grand scale of panoramic views and the intimate detail of portraiture. He was a man of his time, moving between the social circles of Edinburgh and the historical weight of the battlefield.

His professional output included several distinct areas of focus:

  • The depiction of livestock and horses, which made him a household name in Georgian Britain.
  • Sporting scenes, such as the Leith Races and the Musselburgh Races.
  • Large-scale historical works, including a twenty-one square-metre panoramic of the Battle of Waterloo.
  • Portraits of notable figures and their companions, including a depiction of Sir Walter Scott's dog, Camp.

In 1815, he traveled to the field of Waterloo, an experience that informed his later large-scale depictions of the conflict. His social connections were significant; he was a friend of Sir Walter Scott and painted the writer's portrait.

The Final Years in Edinburgh

While his work took him to London to paint the horses of the royal stud, Howe remained principally a resident of Edinburgh. He lived through a period of significant change in British art, maintaining a consistent presence in the Royal Academy in London and the Scottish art scene. His technical skill was noted in both his oil paintings and his more delicate works in pen and ink or pencil on board.

He died in Edinburgh on July 11, 1836. He was buried in the Skirling churchyard, returning to the soil of his birth after a life spent observing the movement of animals and the character of the Scottish landscape.
