The Versatile Career of Hubert Wilm
Hubert Wilm was a German graphic artist, art historian, journalist, and collector. Born in Kaufbeuren, Germany, he moved to Munich where he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule, studying under teachers such as Maximilian Dasio and Julius Diez. His early professional life was marked by a diverse range of creative pursuits; he worked as a freelance commercial artist and gained recognition for his exlibris designs. His graphic works appeared in various publications, including the magazine Jugend. Beyond graphic arts, Wilm engaged in painting, producing oil paintings and ivory miniatures, often employing a technique reminiscent of Gothic painting. He also worked as an illustrator and designer, creating advertising graphics such as the lion for Löwenbräu.
Scholarship and Collecting
Wilm’s intellectual pursuits were deeply intertwined with his passion for art history. He began collecting art during his student years, focusing initially on graphics and later expanding into decorative arts. His expertise eventually led him to specialize in sculpture, particularly medieval and early modern works. He pursued formal studies in art history in Bonn and Munich, earning his doctorate in 1928. His scholarly focus included significant research on Gothic wood carvings and clay sculpture in Germany. In addition to his academic and artistic endeavors, Wilm was a prolific writer, serving as a cultural journalist for several publications, including the Münchner Neuesten Nachrichten and the Bayerische Staatszeitung.
