The Evolution of Form and Material
Han Schuil is a Dutch multimedia artist who works within a tradition of compactness and tension in painting. After attending the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam and the postgraduate program Ateliers '63 in Haarlem, Schuil made a professional debut in 1983 at the gallery Art & Project. While his early career involved working on canvas, he experimented with wood, aluminium, and copper before opting for aluminium in 1985. This material provides a smooth surface for his painting and introduces specific physical elements, such as folded edges, seams, and rivets, which often run through the picture plane.
His work often features supports that protrude into three-dimensional space. Schuil frequently treats the aluminium by making dents and holes that become integral parts of the picture. In the mid-1990s, his compositions became more complex through the mirroring, doubling, and combining of motifs, creating elaborate and baroque arrangements alongside his plainer pictorial language.
Themes and Visual Language
The themes in Schuil’s work originate from everyday reality, drawing from diverse sources such as:
His imagery often presents objects that are not readily identifiable, creating a sense of something well-known that eludes naming. His work has been exhibited in various locations, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the USA. His pieces are held in numerous public and private collections, such as the Rijksmuseum Twente and the S.M.A.K. in Ghent.
