A Life in Portraiture and Landscape

Georges Delfosse was a Canadian painter, graphic artist, and illustrator. Born in Mascouche, Canada, he moved to Montreal with his family in 1882. His formal artistic education began at the École Saint-Jacques and the Collège de Saint-Laurent, followed by studies at the National Institute of Fine Arts, Sciences, Arts, Trades, and Industries under Abbé Joseph Chabert. He continued his training at the Council of Arts and Manufactures of the Province of Quebec under Louis-Philippe Hébert and Edmond Dyonnet, and later at the Art Association of Montreal with William Brymner.

His career as a portrait painter gained significant momentum in 1896 when he painted a portrait of Wilfrid Laurier, the Prime Minister of Canada. In 1900, he founded the Société Canadienne de Portraits et de Tableaux à l’Huile and established his Art National studio. His notable portrait subjects included:

Historical Visions and Artistic Legacy

Delfosse possessed a profound interest in the history of Montreal. With the assistance of archivist Édouard-Zotique Massicotte, he produced numerous paintings depicting historical or vanished locations within the city. In 1917, fifty-five of these works focused on Old Montreal—including La maison de Gédéon de Catalogne, La vieille église Notre-Dame, and La rue Saint-Amable—were exhibited in the Bibliothèque Saint-Sulpice.

Beyond his landscapes and portraits, he was an illustrator for works such as Albert Ferland's Femmes rêvées and Rodolphe Girard's Florence et Pamphile Le Mays Contes vrais. His religious works include La bénédiction de Montréal and historical scenes for the Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde de Montréal. After a car accident in 1932, he was forced to abandon his artistic work. His vast body of work is held in collections such as the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the McCord Stewart Museums, and the National Gallery of Canada.
