Life and Artistic Development
Born in Oespel, Germany, Ernst Weiers was a multifaceted artist whose work spanned painting, lithography, design, sculpture, and draftsmanship. His early years were spent on his father's farm near Münster, and he spent two years working in the mining industry, where he sketched miners in their environment. His artistic talent was recognized by his stepfather, who provided him with a small studio.
Weiers studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1929 to 1933 after receiving a scholarship. During his time there, he was a student of Paul Klee. His life was marked by significant historical events; he emigrated to Switzerland in 1933 with Paul Klee but was deported back in 1936. During World War II, he served as a soldier in Poland, France, Italy, and Russia, documenting his experiences through numerous drawings. He returned from Russian captivity in 1949. He eventually settled in Bernried am Starnberger See, where he lived until his death in 1978.
