A Life of Artistic Wandering
Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Ernst Leyden was a multifaceted artist whose career spanned various disciplines, including painting, watercolor, draftsperson, pastellist, lithographer, architect, sculptor, and printmaker. His formal training took him through art academies in Rotterdam, Brussels, Berlin, and London. In the early years around 1915, he produced impressionistic cityscapes. By 1920, while working in his studio on the island of Urk, he focused on depicting the fishing fleet and other traditional Dutch scenes in a cubist style.
His journey led him to Paris in 1923 after receiving the Royal Subsidy, a move that prompted a life of global travel. Alongside his wife, Karin Kluth, he traveled through Europe before moving to America in 1939 due to the political climate. During his time in the United States, he was known as Van Leyden and became part of the Avant-garde, associating with figures such as Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, and Charlie Chaplin.
Evolution of Style and Form
Leyden's artistic output underwent significant transformations. While he often adhered to the conservative tastes of his patrons, his later years saw a shift toward abstraction. After moving back to Paris in 1957, he entered a phase characterized by large, atmospheric, and poetic abstract works. His later explorations included:
His works are held in various international collections, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen, the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
