A Life in Sculpture and Teaching

Born in The Hague, Netherlands, Bart van Hove was a 19th-century sculptor. He was the son of Johannes and the grandson of the painter Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove. His formal artistic education began at the Akademie van beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, where he was a pupil of Jozef Geefs and Eugène Lacomblé. He continued his studies at the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp from 1870 to 1874. Following a Royal subsidy from Prince Hendrik, he moved to Paris to study under P.J. Cavelier at the Beaux-Arts between 1874 and 1878. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1881, which allowed him to study in Italy for a year, he relocated to Amsterdam in 1882.
