The Artistic Journey of Ann Brockman
Born in Alameda, United States, Ann Brockman began her professional career as an illustrator. Following her marriage to the artist William C. McNulty, she relocated to Manhattan at the age of 18 in 1914. She received her training at the Art Students League, where she studied under George Luks and John Sloan. Her work as an illustrator commenced in 1919, providing cover art for Live Stories and later contributing to various popular magazines and books. By 1930, she transitioned from illustration to becoming a professional artist, participating in numerous group and solo exhibitions. Her work was featured in shows by the Rockport Art Association, Salons of America, the Society of Independent Artists, and the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors.
Style and Subject Matter
As a figurative painter, Brockman focused primarily on rural landscapes, small-town scenes, and coastal settings. She worked in both oils and watercolors, with her watercolors gaining particular recognition late in her career. Her palette varied from vivid, sun-drenched colors to somber tones used for overcast or stormy weather. While she often painted landscapes, she also produced figure pieces, including nudes, circus scenes, and Biblical subjects such as Lot's Wife. Her technical approach was noted for its understanding of form, anatomical structure, and a sense of proportion. Her paintings are held in collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
