Signed on the neckline: Valay 1830 – RomeAfter searches, we don’t know any bronze-smelter who worked in Roma at this time. The precise work and the high quality design suggests that Valay was working for an important “bottega”.We can suppose it was the “bottega degli Spagna”, reference of which Valadier made in 1829 and which was especially specialized in the silverware. Nevertheless, this “bottega” also had a production of bronzes.

A Sculptor of Urban Narratives: The Life and Work of Valay Shende

Valay Shende, born in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, in 1980, is a contemporary artist whose work serves as a powerful reflection on the complexities of modern Indian society. His journey began with a foundational Diploma in Art Teaching from Government Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya in Nagpur (2000), followed by rigorous training at Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture (2004). This academic grounding provided the technical skill and conceptual framework for a career deeply rooted in observation and social commentary. Shende’s commitment to artistic exploration extended internationally with an artist residency at the Open Air Program, Point Éphémère, Paris, in 2006—an experience that broadened his perspective and solidified his unique voice within the global art landscape. He continues to live and work in Mumbai, a city that profoundly shapes his creative vision.

The Weight of Existence: Themes and Influences

Shende’s artistic practice is characterized by its multidisciplinary approach, seamlessly blending sculpture, video art, photography, and installation. However, it is through sculpture that he most powerfully conveys his core themes—the challenges faced by contemporary urban communities, the often-invisible labor that sustains cities, and the delicate balance between tradition and modernity. His work isn’t merely a representation of these realities; it's an attempt to create a “language that communicates beyond borders,” offering a contribution of knowledge and historical reference for future generations. The artist draws inspiration from the everyday lives of those around him, transforming seemingly ordinary figures—security guards, *dabbawalas* (lunchbox delivery men), and laborers—into monumental statements about vulnerability, resilience, and societal structures. A key influence is the inherent dichotomy within India itself: the rapid industrialization juxtaposed with deeply ingrained religious beliefs and cultural practices. This tension fuels his exploration of identity, migration, and economic disparity.

Materiality as Meaning: Technique and Innovation

What truly sets Shende’s work apart is his innovative use of materials. He eschews traditional sculptural mediums in favor of unconventional elements—hundreds of minute metal discs, pocket watches, and copper-plated fiberglass. These choices are not arbitrary; they carry symbolic weight. The repetitive nature of the metal discs can represent the countless individuals contributing to a larger system, while the inclusion of timepieces alludes to the relentless pace of urban life and the fleeting nature of existence. His sculptures possess a remarkable physical presence, often achieving impressive scale despite their intricate construction. This physicality is deliberate—a way to command attention and force viewers to confront the weight of the issues he addresses. The integration of video art with his sculptural installations adds another layer of complexity, breathing movement and narrative into static forms.

Major Achievements and Global Recognition

Shende’s career has been marked by a consistent trajectory of critical acclaim and international recognition. His work has been exhibited in prestigious venues worldwide, including the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum (Mumbai), Tate Modern (London), MAXXI (Rome), Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon (France), and the Seattle Art Museum. He’s participated in significant biennales and art fairs across Asia, Europe, and North America—demonstrating his ability to connect with diverse audiences. A particularly notable achievement was the 2011 installation *TRANSIT*, a large-scale truck sculpture displayed at the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon, which served as a powerful tribute to India’s working class and their often-unseen contributions. His exhibition *Migrating Histories of Molecular Identities* at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum further cemented his reputation as a leading voice in contemporary Indian art.

A Legacy of Social Consciousness

Valay Shende is more than just an artist; he’s a social commentator, a storyteller, and a chronicler of our times. His work transcends aesthetic boundaries, prompting viewers to question the structures that govern their lives and consider the human cost of progress. He believes strongly in the responsibility of artists to engage with society, viewing art as a powerful tool for shaping a better future. Through his meticulous craftsmanship, innovative use of materials, and unwavering commitment to social justice, Shende has established himself as a significant figure in contemporary sculpture—a legacy that will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations of artists to come. His ability to transform the mundane into the monumental, and the invisible into the undeniable, is a testament to the enduring power of art to provoke thought, spark dialogue, and ultimately, drive change.
