Hidetoshi Nagasawa (1940-2018) was a Japanese sculptor and architect who established a significant artistic presence in Italy. Born in Tōneiji, Manchuria, his early life was shaped by the geopolitical complexities of post-war Asia. He pursued formal training in architecture, graduating from Tokyo in 1963. This foundational education would later inform his sculptural and environmental works, blurring the lines between disciplines.
In 1966, Nagasawa embarked on an extensive bicycle journey across Asia and Europe – a formative experience that broadened his artistic horizons. This journey culminated in Milan, Italy, where he decided to settle permanently in 1968. The vibrant Italian art scene provided a fertile ground for his developing artistic vision.
Nagasawa was deeply involved in the collaborative spirit of the Milanese art world. In 1979, he co-founded the Casa degli Artisti with Luciano Fabro and Jole de Sanna – a space dedicated to fostering artistic exchange and experimentation. This collective endeavor highlights his commitment to community and dialogue within the arts.
Nagasawa’s sculptures are notable for their diverse use of materials, including paper, wood, stone, and metal. His work often incorporates elements from both Eastern and Western cultural and religious traditions, creating a unique synthesis of influences. He wasn't confined to traditional sculptural forms; he explored the relationship between sculpture and architecture, leading him to create immersive environments.
Initially focused on individual sculptures, Nagasawa’s practice evolved in the 1980s towards creating larger-scale environments. These installations were designed to engage viewers physically and conceptually, exploring themes of space, perception, and cultural identity. His work demonstrates a consistent exploration of form and material, always grounded in a thoughtful consideration of context.
Nagasawa shared his knowledge and passion for art as a lecturer at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan. He received significant recognition throughout his career, participating in prestigious events such as the Venice Biennale (1972, 1976, 1982, 1988), Documenta 9 in Kassel (1992), and the XII Biennale of Sculpture in Carrara (2006). He also held solo exhibitions at prominent institutions including the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea in Milan (1988), the Galleria Comunale in Bologna (1993), and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Mallorca (1996).
Hidetoshi Nagasawa’s work represents a compelling dialogue between cultures and disciplines. His ability to seamlessly integrate Eastern aesthetics with Western artistic traditions, coupled with his innovative use of materials and spatial concepts, established him as a significant figure in contemporary sculpture. He left behind a body of work that continues to inspire artists and challenge viewers to reconsider the boundaries of art and architecture.
