The works of Mirak Jamal span autobiographical anecdote and shared history, a politically charged past of escape and adjustment, remembering and forgetting. As a child, his family of artists fled post-Revolution Iran for the neighboring USSR, before moving to West Germany, the US, and ultimately to Canada. Today, he lives in Berlin, continuing his experience of itinerancy. His work for the Istanbul Biennial explores the drawings he made as a child in the USSR and West Germany. Sometimes fantastical, always imaginative, these scenes of life and depictions of objects in a number of places chart the artist’s biography from a child’s perspective.Jamal has constructed two works, a diptych and a triptych, based on selections of the drawings, re-interpreted, carved and transferred directly onto drywall – an unstable gypsum surface that suggests construction and incompletion. As they are re-examined, redrawn and reactivated, they are altered with the addition of scratches, colour or other modifications, reflecting the way in which, as the artist forces himself to re-experience the details of his life, many are imperfectly remembered. The source images, some of which are placed around the installation, recall domestic life in Germany, Others contain recognisable Soviet imagery. The works point to the complicated realities of exile and itinerancy, where notions of ‘home’ are in constant flux. Memory is presented as a kaleidoscopic re-summoning of emotional attachment to places that are transitory and fragile. Jamal’s works also suggest that what is most formative can be foreign to us, and that what we can feel closest to, we can simultaneously feel alienated from. While he culls from the imagery of his childhood surroundings, these reiterations also carry contemporary nuances, from the vantage point of an artist working today.

作家の略歴

Mirak Jamal: A Cartography of Displacement and Memory

Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1979, Mirak Jamal’s artistic journey is inextricably linked to a profound sense of displacement – not merely geographical, but also deeply personal. His childhood was shaped by the Iranian Revolution and the subsequent exodus of his family, initiating a nomadic existence that spanned Eastern Europe, Western Europe, the United States, and Canada. This constant movement, this perpetual state of ‘in-betweenness,’ forms the very bedrock of his artistic practice, informing both the subject matter and the techniques he employs.

Jamal’s early years were spent immersed in a world of transient spaces – train stations, highways, waiting rooms, and the edges of cities. These liminal environments became his primary source of inspiration, meticulously documented through countless sketches executed with ballpoint pens on whatever surfaces presented themselves: receipts, napkins, discarded paper. These seemingly mundane observations—domestic scenes, glimpses of Iranian militia parades, the imposing presence of tanks – were not simply records; they were fragments of memory painstakingly assembled to construct a personal narrative. His mother’s preservation of these drawings proved crucial, transforming them from fleeting moments into the foundational material for his art.

The Language of Materials and Story

A defining characteristic of Jamal's work is its deliberate engagement with materials – not as mere support for images, but as active participants in the storytelling process. He frequently incorporates construction materials like cardboard, foam board, wallpaper scraps, and even found objects into his installations and mixed-media pieces. This tactile approach reflects a desire to physically embody the experience of displacement, mirroring the fragmented and unstable nature of his own identity. As Marianne Robin noted in an article for Galerie Sultana, “Mirak Jamal has found his favorite matter in building materials… He writes stories, pictures, reminiscences of a past of wandering after his family fled Iran at the dawn of the revolution.”

The layering and juxtaposition of these disparate elements create complex visual narratives. He doesn’t simply depict scenes; he constructs them – building up layers of history, memory, and speculation. The act of assembling these materials becomes a metaphor for the process of piecing together one's own identity after being severed from roots.

Influences and Artistic Development

Jamal’s artistic education at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto provided him with a foundational understanding of contemporary art practices. However, his work transcends any singular stylistic influence. His practice is deeply rooted in personal experience, drawing on themes of migration, statelessness, and the complexities of identity formation. The echoes of Iranian history—the revolution, exile, and the lingering trauma of displacement—are ever-present, subtly shaping the visual language of his art.

Early exhibitions at Galerie Sultana showcased his distinctive approach, establishing him as a compelling voice within the contemporary art scene. His work has since been presented internationally, reflecting a growing recognition of its poignant exploration of universal themes through a uniquely personal lens.

A Contemporary Voice on Displacement

Mirak Jamal’s art is not merely aesthetically engaging; it's profoundly resonant. He offers a powerful meditation on the human condition in an increasingly globalized and often fragmented world. His work speaks to the anxieties of migration, the challenges of maintaining identity across borders, and the enduring power of memory—both personal and collective. Currently residing in Berlin, Jamal continues to explore these themes through his layered and evocative practice, solidifying his position as a significant contemporary artist grappling with the complexities of displacement and the search for belonging.
