作品解説

Specializing in monumental sculptures, Heizer combines archaic stone and wood into feats of engineering. Brazil shows his interest in negative and positive forms, of presence and absence. The circles and their equivalent fractions are meant to depict the phases of the moon. Brazil is actually tiny when compared to Heizer’s earth-sculptures such as Levitated Mass where he perched a 340-ton granite megalith over a 456-foot-long slot constructed on the grounds of the LA County Museum of Art’s campus.

アーティストの略歴

Michael Heizer: Sculptor of Desert Landscapes

Michael Heizer is an American artist born in Berkeley, California on August 4, 1944. From a young age, he was profoundly influenced by the ancient cities he witnessed during expeditions with his father, Robert Heizer, who was a renowned anthropologist, exploring Central and South America. This formative experience instilled within him a fascination for monumental architecture and the interplay between human presence and natural environments—themes that would become central to his artistic vision. After dropping out of high school, he briefly attended San Francisco Art Institute before relocating to New York City in 1966 where he earned a meager living by painting houses. It was during this period that he encountered Walter de Maria, sparking a collaborative partnership that would propel him into the vanguard of land art.
  • Early Artistic Explorations: Heizer’s initial artistic endeavors centered on geometric canvases painted with PVA latex in New York City. These “displacement paintings,” characterized by hard-edged forms and explorations of positive and negative space—concepts he would later translate into monumental earthworks—established a foundational aesthetic rooted in minimalist principles. Works like *Trapezoid Painting* and *Track Painting* exemplify this early preoccupation with geometric harmony and spatial relationships.
  • The Desert Awakening: Recognizing the limitations of New York’s art scene, Heizer abandoned the city in 1967 and ventured into the expansive deserts of California and Nevada. This decisive move marked a pivotal moment in his artistic trajectory, initiating his groundbreaking engagement with land art—a movement dedicated to creating large-scale sculptures that interact directly with geological formations.
  • Land Art Pioneers: Heizer’s seminal contribution to land art began with *North, East, South, West* (1967), a series of precisely positioned holes dug into the Sierra Nevada landscape—a deliberate rejection of traditional gallery spaces and an assertion of artistic autonomy. Subsequently, he tackled ambitious projects like *Nine Nevada Depressions* (1969) – monumental trenches carved into dry lakes—demonstrating his mastery of earthmoving techniques and his ability to transform natural environments into immersive sculptural experiences.
  • Double Negative: Arguably Heizer’s most iconic work, *Double Negative* (1969-70), stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to scale and conceptual rigor. This colossal sculpture—two trenches spanning 1,500 feet—cut into Mormon Mesa near Overton, Nevada—represents an unprecedented undertaking in earthworks, redefining the boundaries of artistic expression and challenging conventional notions of sculpture’s role within the landscape.
  • Continuing Legacy: Heizer's influence extends beyond his sculptural achievements; he has served as a Guggenheim Fellow, furthering his exploration of artistic ideas and processes. Today, he resides in Hiko, Nevada, and New York City, continuing to push the boundaries of art and architecture while maintaining an enduring connection to the desert landscapes that inspire his creative vision.
Notable Achievements:
  • Recipient of Guggenheim Fellowship (1970)
  • Creation of *Double Negative*, a landmark land art sculpture
  • Development of *City*, a monumental earthwork project
Influences:
  • Ancient Cities: His early travels in Central and South America instilled a fascination for monumental architecture.
  • Minimalism: Heizer’s artistic aesthetic is characterized by geometric forms and spatial relationships rooted in minimalist principles.
