作品解説

This embroidery piece is based on a partial section of the painting Crab by the well-known Ming-dynasty painter Xu Wei (1521-1593 AD), giving the crab the entire image. Having mixed glue in the ink to avoid permeation, the painter employed various techniques, thus creating a vivid crab with just a few strokes.Crabs have been a quite rare subject in embroidery. In order to vividly illustrate the texture of the crab shell, the shape and gesture of the crab, the embroiderer skillfully employed various techniques including long and short stitches (changduan zhen, 长短针), broken-line-making stitches (xu zhen, 虚针) and color-transitioning stitches (can zhen, 参针) precisely reproducing the uneven surface of crab shell, transferring the ink charm of the painting onto the embroidery.Award:“Primrose Award” at the Second Oriental Headquarter Arts and Crafts Exposition in 2010

Lu Weihua: Bridging Tradition and Innovation in Botanical Painting

Lu Weihua’s artistic journey began amidst the rich cultural heritage of Yangzhou, China—a city renowned for its centuries-old tradition of embroidery and celebrated as “every female of Yangzhou is good at embroidering.” Born into a family steeped in scholarly pursuits and artistic craftsmanship, Lu Shuxian, his mother, instilled in him an early appreciation for both calligraphy and the meticulous art of botanical painting, mirroring the stylistic influences of prominent painters like “Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou.” This formative experience would profoundly shape his subsequent creative endeavors.
  • Early Life & Artistic Foundations: Lu Shuxian’s dedication to artistic excellence extended beyond her own practice; she nurtured her daughter’s passion for art from a young age, fostering an understanding of traditional Chinese painting techniques and aesthetics.
  • The Influence of Yangzhou Embroidery: The legacy of Yangzhou embroidery—characterized by its delicate silk threads, precise stitches, and evocative depictions of landscapes—served as a cornerstone in Lu Shuxian's artistic vision. This influence is palpable in her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to convey emotion through subtle brushstrokes.
  • A Daughter’s Artistic Pursuit: Lu Junjian, Lu Shuxian’s daughter, continued the family tradition of artistic exploration, honing her skills in various embroidery genres while absorbing the wisdom imparted by her mother.

The Emergence of Freehand Ink Painting Embroidery Lu Weihua's artistic breakthrough arrived with a revolutionary approach—the fusion of traditional ink painting and embroidery techniques. Inspired by his mother’s pioneering spirit, Lu Weihua embarked on a path that defied convention, blending the expressive power of calligraphy with the precision of needlework. This innovative method distinguishes him from many contemporary artists and underscores his commitment to preserving cultural heritage while embracing artistic experimentation.
  • Conceptual Innovation: Recognizing the limitations of conventional art forms, Lu Weihua sought to transcend boundaries by merging two distinct disciplines—a bold step that reflects a deep understanding of artistic history and symbolism.
  • Technique & Material Exploration: He meticulously studied the intricacies of silk splitting—a technique perfected over centuries—and skillfully applied it to create embroidery pieces that capture the essence of ink paintings, resulting in breathtaking visual narratives.

Notable Achievements & Recognition Lu Weihua’s artistic accomplishments have garnered international acclaim and cemented his position as a leading figure in contemporary botanical painting. His dedication to preserving Yangzhou embroidery traditions has been honored with numerous accolades, including titles such as “Advanced Artist,” “One of the First ‘Chinese Embroidery Masters,’” and “Representative Inheritor of Provincial-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage Item.”
  • Lotus Mountain Success: Lu Weihua’s collaborative project with Bergen Water Gardens—featuring his newly bred lotus hybrids—demonstrates his commitment to horticultural innovation and underscores the enduring beauty of Yangzhou's natural landscape.
  • International Recognition: His lotus cultivars have achieved success in prestigious competitions like the “Second National New Varieties of Water Lilies Competition” and the “37th National Lotus Exhibition,” showcasing his talent as a botanist and artist alike.

Legacy & Continuing Artistic Exploration Lu Weihua’s artistic legacy extends beyond individual achievements; he embodies the spirit of cultural preservation combined with creative innovation—a testament to Yangzhou's rich artistic heritage. As he pursues new artistic endeavors, Lu Weihua remains steadfast in his dedication to honoring tradition while pushing the boundaries of botanical painting, ensuring that Yangzhou embroidery continues to inspire generations to come.
