Growing up immersed in a subculture that prized individuality and challenged societal norms, Takahashi found an early outlet for his expression as the vocalist for the cover band “Tokyo Sex Pistols.” This formative experience wasn’t merely a youthful pursuit; it instilled within him a deep appreciation for anti-establishment aesthetics and a fascination with the deconstruction of conventional style. The influence of Vivienne Westwood, a punk icon he deeply admired, proved pivotal, shaping his early understanding of fashion as a vehicle for social commentary and personal identity.
In 1993, while still navigating the academic world of Bunka Fashion College, Takahashi launched Undercover, a label that would quickly become synonymous with avant-garde streetwear. This wasn’t simply about creating clothes; it was about building a universe—a space where high fashion intersected with the gritty realities of urban life. Simultaneously, he co-founded Nowhere, a retail venture in Tokyo's Ura-Harajuku district alongside Nigo, the founder of BAPE.
