ポーランド系ユダヤ人の移民であるアブラハムとレベッカ・ボンバーグの間に生まれたデビッド・ボムバーグは、当初シティ・アンド・ギルド技術美術学校で学び、その後バーミンガムでリトグラフ職人としての修行を積みました。
