Born in Pessac, France, in 1978, Benoît Maire is a contemporary artist whose practice seamlessly blends art and philosophy, transforming theoretical concepts into tangible forms. He holds a postgraduate diploma in philosophy from Sorbonne Université Paris I and an DNSEP from Villa Arson, Nice, establishing a foundation for his multifaceted artistic exploration.
Growing up in Pont-de-Vivaux, Marseille, Maire’s upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for observation and reflection—qualities that would become central to his artistic vision. His Italian heritage further enriched his worldview, fostering an openness to diverse cultural influences.
Maire's artistic journey began with residencies at Villa Arson and Palais de Tokyo, where he honed his skills in film, sculpture, painting, photography, collage, and performance art. He distinguishes himself through a meticulous approach to materiality—primarily utilizing wood—combined with an evocative use of color palettes that aim to capture the essence of emotion and atmosphere.
His work has garnered recognition in prestigious institutions worldwide, including Centre Pompidou, FRAC Aquitaine, Kadist Fondation, ICA London, and David Roberts Art Fondation. Maire’s paintings explore themes rooted in mythology, geometry, sociology, and psychoanalysis—reflecting a profound engagement with intellectual discourse.
Maire's artistic practice is fundamentally shaped by Jean-François Lyotard’s concept of the ‘differend,’ which posits that meaning can exist beyond linguistic conventions. He sees the canvas as an arena for confronting contradictions and challenging established paradigms—a testament to his unwavering commitment to pushing creative boundaries.
Maire’s artistic legacy extends beyond individual artworks; it resides in his pioneering exploration of the intersection between art and philosophy—a contribution that continues to inspire artists and scholars alike.
