His fortunes began to shift when Werner Munzinger, the French vice-consul, intervened and secured his freedom at Massawa on the Red Sea coast. It was here, in 1870, that Onesimos entered the Swedish Evangelical Mission (SEM) school led by Rev. Bengt Peter Lundahl.
