The Life and Artistic Evolution of Ben-Zion
Born in Starokostiantyniv, Russian Empire, Ben-Zion, also known as Ben-Zion Weinman, was a multifaceted artist whose creative journey spanned painting, printmaking, sculpture, poetry, and writing. After traveling to Vienna at age seventeen to study art, he eventually immigrated to the United States in 1920. His early literary efforts included writing poems and fairy tales in Hebrew. As his career in visual arts progressed, he began hyphenating his name, transitioning from his birth name to the moniker Ben-Zion. His artistic practice was diverse, encompassing oil paint, watercolors, and intaglio printmaking, and he later expanded his repertoire to include welded iron sculptures in the 1950s.

This group sought to protest the perceived equivalence of American painting and literal painting. His work often featured expressionist reinterpretations of biblical scenes, a theme notably explored in his first large-scale painting, Friday Evening, which depicted a family's Sabbath dinner table. Beyond his own studio practice, he served as an educator, teaching art through the Works Progress Administration at Cooper Union and other locations. His significant contributions to the art world are preserved in numerous prestigious institutions, including:
