A life shaped by light and line

Axel Revold began his path in Ålesund, the son of a merchant named Julius Revold and Johanne Hjelpsten. His early years were marked by studies in engineering in Kristiania, starting in 1906, before he turned toward the canvas. In 1908, he left his engineering education behind to move to Paris. There, he spent two years as a student of Henri Matisse. This period in France brought him into contact with the approaches of Paul Cézanne and Kees van Dongen. He carried these lessons back to Norway, where he would eventually spend twenty years as a professor at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts.

His personal life was intertwined with the art community. He was married to Ingrid Müller from 1915 until 1928, and later married the painter Irmelin Nansen, who was the daughter of Fridtjof Nansen and Eva Nansen. Through these connections, his world remained deeply rooted in the creative circles of his time. He also raised a daughter, the artist Dagny Hald.

The language of color and form

Revold developed a specific way of seeing that relied on a three-colour scale technique. This method focused on the alternation between contrasting and harmonizing elements to build a solid composition. In works like Italian Woman, painted in 1913 while he was staying in Marseilles, one can see how he used shapes and colors to move away from naturalistic depiction. He favored an abstract play with forms where individual personal details were secondary to the effect of the hues. His brushwork often sought to liberate color from its duty to simply describe a subject.

His interests extended beyond the small scale of oil on canvas. He worked extensively with fresco and mural decorations, contributing to the decoration of the Oslo City Hall and creating large-scale works for the Bergen Stock Exchange in 1922. His motifs often drew from the landscapes of Nordland, featuring sea, forest, and symbolic figures. Some of his notable paintings include:

  • Apasjer (1912)
  • Italian Woman (1913)
  • Fishermen in the Mediterranean (1914)
  • Models (1916)
  • Fiskevær (1916)
  • Morgen (1927)
  • Summer Night in northern Norway (1930)
  • Gate i Luxor (1930)
  • Markedsscene i Kairo (1930)

Teaching and the resistance

Between 1925 and 1946, Revold held a professorship at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts. During this time, he also led a private painting school from 1924 to 1925. His influence was felt through the "Revold school" in Norwegian art history, as he passed his technical methods on to new generations. He was also part of the breakaway group known as "The 14."

When the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany began in 1941, Revold’s role shifted. He had to leave the academy, but he and Jean Heiberg continued to teach in secret. They ran an undercover art academy called "The Factory" (Fabrikken), moving through various locations in Oslo, including a closed corset factory and the home of Lauritz Falk. This period of quiet resistance mirrored the gravity of the era.

His career earned him several honors, including the Prince Eugen Medal in 1955 and being named a Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. He also received decorations from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and France as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. He died in Bærum in 1962.
