raffaello sernesi, an italian painter and medallist, was born in florence in 1838. he is associated with the macchiaioli group, a movement that emerged in italy during the late 19th century.

early life and training

sernesi's early life was marked by modest circumstances. to support his family, he began an apprenticeship to a local engraver. in 1856, he enrolled at the accademia of florence, where he studied under antonio ciseri. as part of his training, sernesi made copies of works by quattrocento artists such as masaccio and botticelli.

artistic career

sernesi's artistic career was marked by a brief but promising start. in 1859, he began frequenting the caffè michelangiolo, where he met fellow macchiaioli artists, including his close friend odoardo borrani. sernesi served as a volunteer in the second italian war of independence in 1859.

notable works and exhibitions
