Narayanan’s formative years were steeped in the mentorship of giants. Under the guidance of D. P. Roy Choudhury and the visionary K. C. S. Paniker, he developed a foundational mastery that respected both realism and the burgeoning lyrical abstraction of his era. His time in Chennai was more than an education; it was an immersion into a movement that sought to redefine Indian identity through art. This period also saw him involved with the early efforts of the Cholamandal Artists' Village, a landmark in Indian art history, which deeply influenced his understanding of communal and regional artistic purpose.
The trajectory of Narayanan’s career shifted dramatically when a scholarship from the Government of France allowed him to transplant his practice to Paris. Settling in this vibrant cultural epicenter, he entered a period of intense experimentation. Studying monumental art under Jean Bertholle and engraving under Lucien Couteau, he began to deconstruct the figurative world.
