Issan Ichinei, born Hu in 1247 in Linhai, Zhejiang province, China, stands as a pivotal figure in the transmission of Zen Buddhism from its native land to Japan. His dedication to Chan brought him under the tutelage of Yuxi Ruzhi, and eventually, he became abbot of Puji Monastery on Putuoshan Island.
