Ganja Gate or Chilabord Gate is one of the three main gates of Shusha fortress and is located in the north of the fortress. The other two gates of the fortress are the Gates of Yerevan and Aghoghlan. The gate, built during the rule of Panahali khan, has already been called Ganja Gate or Chilabord Gate since the 18th century. The way from Shusha fortress through this gate connects the city with Ganja city and Chilabord region of the Karabakh khanate. After the annexation of the Karabakh khanate to the Russian Empire in 1805, the Ganja Gate began to be called as Elizavetpol Gate due to the renaming of Ganja to the Elizavetpol (1804).

The Architectural Soul of Azerbaijan: The Art of Elturan Velioglu Avalov

In the tapestry of Azerbaijani fine art, few threads are as intricately woven with history and structural precision as those left by Elturan Velioglu Avalov. Born in Baku in 1940, Avalov emerged not merely as a painter, but as a visual chronicler whose work serves as a bridge between the enduring stone of the past and the expressive ink of the present. His artistic journey was deeply rooted in the discipline of design; after graduating from the architecture faculty of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute in 1963, he brought a scholar’s eye to the canvas. This unique dual identity—as both an architect and an artist—allowed him to perceive monuments not just as static relics, but as living entities possessing rhythm, weight, and a profound dialogue with the natural landscape.

Avalov’s development was shaped by the rigorous traditions of Soviet-era training, yet his spirit remained fiercely dedicated to the preservation of Azerbaijani cultural identity. His mastery is perhaps most vibrantly realized in his monumental “Shusha” series. In this ambitious graphic undertaking, Avalov utilized the delicate yet decisive techniques of pen and ink to document upwards of fifty architectural treasures of the historic city of Shusha. Through his brush and pen, iconic structures such as Panahali Khan's Castle, the Ganja Gate, and the Khurshidbanu Natavan Palace were transformed into evocative narratives. Each stroke of his hand captured the weathered textures of ancient masonry and the ephemeral play of light, ensuring that the architectural soul of Shusha would remain etched in the collective memory of his nation.

A Legacy Written in Stone and Ink

The significance of Avalov’s work extends far beyond the aesthetic beauty of his drawings; it lies in his role as a guardian of heritage. His scholarly contributions, including influential books such as "The Architecture of Shusha" (1977) and "The Architect's Eyes" (1978), demonstrate a lifelong commitment to the study and preservation of historical faces. His art is often characterized by a meticulous realism that does not sacrifice emotion, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that invites the viewer to wander through the Mamayi Neighbourhood or stand before the imposing Gara Boyukkhanim Castle. In these works, one finds a profound respect for the way human construction interacts with the earth, presenting a world where history and nature exist in a silent, beautiful tension.

Throughout his illustrious career, Avalov has received numerous accolades that reflect his standing in the international art community. His achievements include:

  • Honored Art Worker of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1991): A prestigious recognition of his profound impact on the nation's cultural landscape.
  • Academic Distinction: Serving as a professor since 2003 and holding membership in the Eastern Countries International Academy of Architecture and the Union of Azerbaijan Artists.
  • Global Exhibition Presence: Showcasing his vision through more than thirty exhibitions, with notable individual displays in Baku, Moscow, and Turkey.

Today, the work of Elturan Avalov remains a vital touchstone for anyone seeking to understand the cultural heartbeat of Azerbaijan. His ability to blend the technical precision of an architect with the poetic sensitivity of a fine artist has created a body of work that is both a historical record and a timeless masterpiece of graphic art.
