His journey into the depths of visual expression began at St. Clement Danes School, but it was his scholarship to the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in 1956 that truly set the stage for a lifetime of mastery. Under the rigorous tutelage of William Coldstream, Levene entered an environment of intense observation, forging lifelong bonds with fellow artists such as Anthony Green and Peter Freeth. This formative period was not merely about learning technique; it was about developing a way of seeing—a meticulous approach to light and form that would become the cornerstone of his enduring legacy.
While his early explorations flirted with the dreamlike realms of Surrealism and the raw emotion of Expressionism, Levene eventually found his true calling in the landscape.
