basu's scholarship from the university of calcutta led him to study art at the royal academy in london (1924-1926), where he was influenced by post-impressionist walter sickert. notably, basu refused an invitation to decorate the pavilion at the british empire exhibition, showcasing his commitment to his artistic vision. basu co-founded the indian school of oriental art in 1921 with bhabani charan laha and later became the director of the government college of art & craft. his notable works include sphinx (oil on plywood) and self portrait (1945), showcasing his mastery of oil colors.
