The structure of the drawings that make up Susan Hefuna’s Building was inspired by the act of walking through the gridded streets of New York City. Each of the work’s nine parts was completed at a single sitting by applying Indian ink to two layers of tracing paper. These layers interact with one another to establish a dialogue between abstracted geometric shapes in which angular and circular lines are incorporated into network-like designs. These are reminiscent of the matrices of horizontal and vertical lines that characterize modernist metropolitan architecture, and the complex latticework—which is both decorative and functional—of classical Islamic Mashrabiya window screens.

Her artistic journey began amidst the vibrant cultural landscape of Cairo, fostering an appreciation for both Eastern and Western traditions that continues to inform her creative process. Early Influences: Hefnou’s formative years were steeped in Egyptian art history and Islamic calligraphy—a heritage profoundly impacting her visual vocabulary. These influences instilled a deep understanding of symbolic representation and storytelling techniques rooted in centuries-old artistic practices, shaping her perspective on conveying complex narratives through imagery. Formal Training: Recognizing the importance of broadening artistic horizons, Hefnou pursued formal artistic training in Germany, mastering diverse mediums and engaging with contemporary art discourse. This experience solidified her technical skills while simultaneously exposing her to innovative conceptual approaches—a duality that characterizes her distinctive style. Hefnou’s artistic style is distinguished by meticulous attention to detail and a deliberate exploration of textures and materials. Her drawings frequently depict intricate patterns inspired by Islamic geometric designs—a direct reflection of her Egyptian roots—yet they simultaneously incorporate abstract elements that invite viewers to contemplate deeper philosophical questions about perception and meaning. Sculpture works similarly strive for balance, juxtaposing organic forms with precise lines to communicate notions of resilience and transformation, mirroring the cyclical nature of life itself. Installations aim to create immersive environments designed to stimulate contemplation and foster dialogue concerning cultural exchange and personal introspection—a testament to Hefnou’s belief in art's capacity to provoke thought and inspire empathy. Notable Projects: Hefnou’s artistic output includes “Building,” a sculptural exploration mirroring the human experience through architectural structures, prompting reflection on permanence and fragility. Furthermore, "Patience Is Beautiful - Al Sabr Gamil," utilizes repetitive patterns—a deliberate stylistic choice—to convey the significance of perseverance and unwavering dedication to achieving goals. Recognition & Legacy: Hefnou’s work has garnered acclaim within both the Egyptian art community and internationally, establishing her as a respected voice in contemporary visual arts. Her commitment to artistic experimentation—coupled with her unwavering devotion to communicating nuanced ideas—solidifies her position as an artist who encourages viewers to contemplate questions of cultural heritage and individual growth.
