Rockwell Kent, peintre, graveur, illustrateur, écrivain, marin et aventurier américain, est né le 21 juin 1882 à Tarrytown, dans l'État de New York. D’origine anglaise, Kent a passé sa jeunesse à New York et dans les environs, fréquentant la Horace Mann School. Il étudia la composition et le design avec Arthur Wesley Dow à l'Art Students League en 1900 et la peinture avec William Merritt Chase de 1900 à 1902.

Carrière artistique et inspirations

Les premières peintures de Kent de Mount Monadnock et du New Hampshire, présentées pour la première fois à la Society of American Artists à New York en 1904, ont marqué le début de sa réputation de moderniste américain précoce.
