JP Mika (born in 1980, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo) took an early interest in drawing and ornamentation and attended the painting department of the Kinshasa Academy of Fine Art. He also went to ARAP, The Popular Art Research Studio created by the artist Chéri Chérin who later became his “Master”. There, he improved his skills and became a member of APPO, The Popular Painters Society. In 2004, he established his own Studio and named it EBA, The Fine Arts Events. He is an outstanding draftsman and he has long borrowed the themes and compositions of his elders and his mentor Chéri Chérin. As Chéri Samba before him, Mika puts himself on stage in his works, painting self portraits or adding himself in group composition - most of the time dressed as a “sapeur” (group of well-dressed men). For the last couple of years, he has develop his own style concentrated on portraits and simplifying his composition by using colourful fabrics that he uses as a background. This “finding” and the perfect use of colour provides a positive energy to his work and that now profoundly stands out from his peers. His very realistic paintings are nevertheless benevolent and whatever the subject, he gently and kindly paints a modern, dynamic and happy Africa.

Biographie de l'artiste

A Quiet Revolution in Everyday Materials

Mika Yoshizawa, born in Tokyo in 1959, represents a fascinating figure within contemporary Japanese art—a painter who defies easy categorization and consistently reimagines the boundaries of artistic expression. Her approach isn’t about grand narratives or monumental canvases; rather, it's rooted in meticulous observation and a deliberate confrontation with commonplace objects, transforming them into vehicles for profound contemplation. Yoshizawa’s formative years were marked by an immersion in art education at Tama Art University, where she honed her skills and developed a distinctive artistic vision. This academic grounding instilled within her a deep understanding of traditional painting techniques—particularly sumi-e—the Japanese monochrome ink wash style—but crucially, it also fueled her desire to push beyond established conventions. She recognized that true innovation lay not in replicating the past but in interrogating its legacy and applying its principles to new contexts. Her artistic practice centers around a captivating process of layering seemingly insignificant items – buttons, stones, fragments of fabric – onto meticulously crafted sumi-e backgrounds. This juxtaposition generates striking visual dialogues between the organic elegance of ink wash painting and the tangible presence of everyday objects. The resulting artworks aren’t merely depictions; they are explorations of texture, materiality, and subtle shifts in perspective. Yoshizawa skillfully utilizes variations in brushstrokes and tonal gradations to imbue these objects with a sense of history and memory, prompting viewers to reconsider their own relationship to the familiar. Yoshizawa's work has garnered considerable acclaim and recognition throughout her career. Awards bestowed upon her underscore the impact of her artistic vision and its contribution to the broader discourse on contemporary art. Notably, pieces like “wo-71,” “to-25,” and “Self-esteem” exemplify her signature style—a masterful blend of technique and conceptual depth. These artworks demonstrate a remarkable ability to distill complex ideas into deceptively simple forms, inviting viewers to engage in an active process of interpretation. Yoshizawa’s artistic journey began with a dedication to mastering sumi-e, recognizing its profound capacity for conveying emotion and capturing the essence of nature. This foundational knowledge informed her subsequent explorations of mixed media, where she skillfully combined ink wash techniques with materials like fabric and stone—a deliberate choice that challenged conventional notions of artistic materiality. Her work speaks volumes about her belief in the transformative power of seemingly insignificant elements, elevating them to symbols of memory and contemplation. Her exploration of texture and surface is particularly noteworthy. Yoshizawa meticulously manipulates brushstrokes and tonal gradations to create surfaces that resonate with subtle shifts in perspective—a technique reminiscent of Zen calligraphy, where emptiness and stillness are paramount. By juxtaposing the organic beauty of ink wash painting with the tactile qualities of everyday objects, she invites viewers to engage in a dialogue about perception and representation. Throughout her career, Yoshizawa has consistently pursued artistic excellence while maintaining an unwavering commitment to intellectual rigor—a characteristic that distinguishes her work from many others in contemporary Japanese art. Her dedication to observation and contemplation serves as inspiration for artists seeking to transcend superficial aesthetics and delve into the deeper meanings of existence. Mika Yoshizawa’s legacy resides not only in her stunning artworks but also in her profound contribution to the ongoing conversation about artistic innovation and cultural heritage.
