Description de l'œuvre

Beatriz Milhazes: A Kaleidoscope of Brazilian Modernism

Beatriz Milhazes is a Brazilian artist whose distinctive style—characterized by layered collage, geometric abstraction, and vibrant color palettes—has cemented her position as one of Brazil’s most celebrated contemporary painters. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1960, Milhazes' artistic journey began amidst the fertile intellectual landscape fostered by Parque Lage Art School, where she honed her skills alongside fellow artists, shaping a collaborative spirit that continues to inform her creative process. Her upbringing within a family steeped in art history—her father a lawyer and her mother an art historian—provided invaluable grounding for understanding both formal aesthetics and cultural narratives. Early Life & Education: Milhazes pursued social communication at Faculdade Integradas Hélio Alonso (Facha) from 1978 to 1981, followed by studies in Visual Arts at Escola de Artes Visuais Parque Lage from 1980 to 1982. These formative experiences instilled a deep appreciation for artistic experimentation and a commitment to exploring diverse perspectives. She attended Parque Lage Art School alongside prominent Brazilian artists like Mario Camus and Antônio Dias—a cohort that would become known as “Geração Oitenta” or “The Eighties Generation,” marking a pivotal moment in Brazilian art following the end of military dictatorship. This period witnessed a resurgence of interest in painting, prioritizing expressive freedom and embracing influences from European Modernism alongside traditional Brazilian iconography. Influences & Artistic Vision: Milhazes’ work draws heavily from Brazilian cultural imagery—particularly motifs related to carnaval, samba, and Brazilian folklore—juxtaposed with references to European modernist painting movements like Cubism and Bauhaus. This deliberate blending of traditions reflects her fascination with the interplay between local identity and universal artistic principles. She cites three artists as the ‘centre of her interest’: Matisse, Mondrian and Tarsila do Amaral—a trio that profoundly shaped her aesthetic sensibilities and informed her exploration of color and geometric abstraction. Her approach to artmaking was influenced by Antropofagia – “cannibalizing” European Modernist traditions to forge a uniquely Brazilian visual language. Technique & Style: Milhazes’ signature technique involves meticulous collage construction, utilizing meticulously cut paper shapes layered upon one another to create complex visual textures and patterns. She employs bold geometric forms—circles, squares, triangles—often rendered in contrasting colors, resulting in compositions that evoke the dynamism of Op Art while retaining a distinctly Brazilian sensibility. Her process begins with painting translucent plastic sheets – a method she pioneered – before peeling away the dried shapes and collaging them onto the canvas. This innovative technique contributes to the ethereal quality of her paintings and underscores her mastery of material manipulation. The resulting images are superimposed onto the canvas, creating an illusionistic depth that enhances the visual impact of her work. Notable Achievements & Recognition: Milhazes’ artistic breakthrough arrived with “Meu Limão” (My Lemon), a 2000 painting that sold for $2.1 million at Sotheby’s in California—establishing her as the highest-priced living Brazilian artist at auction and securing her place among Brazil's most influential contemporary painters. Subsequent exhibitions at Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Banco Itaú and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía garnered critical acclaim for their conceptual depth and aesthetic innovation—demonstrating Milhazes’ unwavering dedication to artistic excellence and her ability to engage audiences with challenging visual narratives. Her work has been recognized through numerous awards and accolades—affirming her position as a visionary artist pushing boundaries within the realm of abstract painting and solidifying her legacy as one of Brazil's foremost cultural figures. Beatriz Milhazes continues to reside in Rio de Janeiro, where she maintains a studio space alongside fellow artists from her graduating class—a testament to collaborative spirit that underscores the enduring influence of Parque Lage Art School on her artistic trajectory. Her ongoing exploration of color, geometry, and collage ensures that Beatriz Milhazes remains at the forefront of Brazilian contemporary art, inspiring future generations with her bold vision and masterful execution.
